Windows 11 will control colorful RGB LED light shows in the future

Microsoft is making the new Windows 11 pre-release Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23475 available in the “Dev Channel”. It brings new functions, including for the file explorer, such as a revised address bar.

Also new is the “Dynamic Lighting” function, which is likely to appear in the future in German versions of Windows 11 in the “Personalization” area of ​​the system settings. Without any additional tools, Dynamic Lighting can control certain RGB LED lighting functions that are particularly common on gaming machines.

The prerequisite for controlling individual or multiple RGB LEDs through Windows 11 is that the colorful light-emitting diodes are connected to a USB controller that meets the “HID LampArray” specification. It is in version 1.4 of the USB-IF HID Usage Tables for USB.

You can even build such a HID LampArray yourself with an Arduino and open firmware Microsoft provides instructions on GitHub.



Under Windows 11 it should be possible to set RGB LEDs according to HID LampArray in the “Personalization” area.

More important for the PC market, however, is the support of finished devices. According to Microsoft initially work Above all, illuminated keyboards and mice from Razer, soon to be followed by Asus and also the Microsoft Pro IntelliMouse. Windows 10 1809 (Build 17763) also has functions for controlling LampArrays via the UWP API Windows.Devices.Lights.
