Wimbledon isn’t just about tennis. Because around the square, stars and royals have a fashion match every year. The “Lawn Tennis Championships”, named after the venue Wimbledon, have been held annually for two weeks in June or July since 1877 and, as the most prestigious tennis tournament, attract stars and starlets from all over the world.

Even the nobility of that time in the 19th century wanted to stand out visually from the rest of the population. This created a trend that has lasted for over a century. To this day, it is important to the stars and starlets to present extravagant, style-conscious clothing. This unwritten law also applies in 2023 – 146 years after the first Wimbledon match.
By the way, fashion is not only an issue in the stands. Because Wimbledon is known for its old traditions, which are not only reflected in the patronage of royal members or the annual kilos of strawberries with cream that wander over the counters at the tournament. The players’ clothing is also relevant, as it must be 90 percent white.

One reason: sweat stains are less visible on white material. Another: White is considered “pure” and “clean”. And since tennis has always been a sport for the rich and noble, they wanted to stand out from the proletariat by wearing white clothes, at least back then.
