Why some stars wore a blue ribbon at the Oscars

It is not unusual for actors to use major events to make political statements. At this year’s Berlinale, for example, protests for climate protection took place and numerous bear pins in Ukraine colors were found on evening wear.

Some stars also made a political statement at the Oscars in Los Angeles. They wore blue bows on their clothes and were joined by Daniel Brühl, Bill Nighy and Cate Blanchett.

The stars support the campaign #WithRefugees the UN refugee agency UNHCR. “Wearing the blue #WithRefugees ribbon on the red carpet sends a powerful visual message that everyone has the right to seek safety – whoever, wherever, whenever he or she is where,” UNHCR wrote in a press release in February. Many stars with a blue ribbon had already been seen at the awards ceremony of the “British Academy of Film and Television Arts” (BAFTA).

Cate Blanchett, longtime ambassador at UNHCR, said in a press statement: “What I love about film is the way it draws us into compelling human issues to uncover what connects us all. Whenever I am a refugee When I met people – in places like Lebanon, Jordan or Bangladesh, in the UK or at home in Australia – what struck me was not their ‘otherness’ but how many things we have in common.” However, her bow was difficult to see on her blue dress on Oscar night.

Two Oscar winners were also out and about with the blue ribbon: Volker Bertelmann, who was awarded “Best Film Music” for the German film “Nothing New in the West”, and Guillermo Del Toro, winner in the category “Best Animated Feature Film”.
