The quiche of discord. On Friday, an employee in a bakery in Vénissieux, in the Rhône, made a blunder that took on exaggerated proportions, to say the least. By mistakenly recommending a dish containing pork to Muslim customers, the saleswoman set in motion an infernal machine.
According to the Parisianthe affair began on Friday morning, after one of the bakery employees sold a bacon quiche instead of a cheese quiche to two men without telling them that the quiche in question contained pork. The customers returned later “like furies” the bakery owner explained to our colleagues. An altercation ensued, fueled by the two men who were offended at not having been informed of the contents of the quiche.
“It’s gone too far”
While the boss understands that his customers were not happy, he nevertheless deplored on Facebook that this time, “it went too far”. His post, in which he explained this affair, also specified that he had decided to no longer sell any products containing pork in order to avoid further misunderstandings. Except that the extreme right was quick to ride the wave, taking up the baker’s post which was embellished with scandalized remarks with Islamophobic overtones.
Worse, the National Rally MP for the Rhône, Tiffany Joncour, issued a press release on Saturday to castigate the “community pressures exerted by Islamists on the town’s shopkeepers.” The MP even claimed that the bakery was going to close because its owner “refuses to comply with Halal.” Regretting that the far right was advertising at his expense, the baker denied this latest claim to Le Parisien, explaining that he had already sold his business before Friday’s events.
