Who is Sparks, the pop group behind Leos Carax’s “Annette”?

The Sparks made their dream come true. Their musical Annette finally sees the light of day in cinema, under the direction of Leos Carax. “We will undoubtedly have a little shiver of joy on Tuesday evening, going up the steps for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, because we no longer believed in it”, confides the duo of Californian musicians to 20 minutes.

The story of a couple of stars and their exceptional granddaughter, the brothers Ron and Russell Mael had initially thought of telling it on a stage. Too expensive, the project took off again thanks to the director of Holy Motors and performers Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. “Leos Carax’s interest in Annette pulled it out of oblivion, they remember. He immediately understood our references because he shared our passion for Umbrellas of Cherbourg by Jacques Demy. Our collaboration allowed everyone to express the best of their emotions. »The duo is no stranger to fruitful collaborations such as with
Rita Mistosuko for Singing in the Shower in 1988 or Franz Ferdinand for
FFS in 2015.

A new audience

At 75 and 72 years old, Ron (a man of few words, but dressed to the nines) and Russell (more talkative with his black hair and his rock look) still have as much fishing and remember without nostalgia the time when the Queen group was their first act. Elegant, they refuse to comment on the fact that the song Bohemian rhapsody owes a lot to them This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us. “With 50 years of career and 25 albums behind us, we do not feel any bitterness towards anyone and this especially sinceAnnette will make us known to a younger audience. It is unexpected for musicians of our generation ”, they insist.

With the film by Leos Carax, the documentary The Sparks Brothers by Edgar Wright distributed in France on July 28 and a Parisian concert scheduled for April 19, 2022 at the Casino de Paris, the Sparks reappear younger than ever and at the cleat for new success.
