WhatsApp will apparently soon have its own AI image generator

WhatsApp is apparently working on integrating a practical AI image generator into the messaging app. The beta version 2.24.12.4 of WhatsApp for Android shows “Imagine” as an additional option for a message attachment. Imagine is known to be Meta’s AI image generator. However, this function is still in development within WhatsApp, and even beta testers cannot use it yet. It is therefore unclear when users will also be able to create images using artificial intelligence within WhatsApp.

At the end of 2023, Meta Platforms presented “Imagine”, a standalone AI image generator for the web that uses artificial intelligence to generate images from text specifications. Imagine is based on the same foundation model from Meta AI as the image generator called Emu, which was presented at the end of September, but which is only used for Instagram and images created in the Facebook group’s messenger. Meta’s third platform, WhatsApp, should soon also get this AI image generator.

So far, Meta AI as an AI chatbot is only accessible to a limited number of WhatsApp users in certain regions, but the company is already working on expanding the AI functions, as an analysis of the latest beta version of WhatsApp by WABetaInfo showsAccordingly, users will in future also be able to generate individualized images using AI within the messaging app.

A screenshot of WhatsApp’s beta version 2.24.12.4 for Android shows an additional entry for possible attachments to a message. This function takes on the name of Meta’s AI image generator for the web, Imagine, so it can be assumed that it will have a similar function. Since WhatsApp is also rolling out important functions for other mobile operating systems, iPhone owners should also get the AI image generation within WhatsApp in addition to Android users. The only question is when.

Before that, however, WhatsApp users should get another new feature, namely the option to mark certain chats as favorites in order to be able to find these message threads more quickly. This function is part of the beta version 2.24.12.7 of WhatsApp for Android and is already available for some beta testers to test. This should help users with a large number of active chats in particular to find messages.

Since the favorites function, in contrast to AI image generation according to WABetaInfo is already available for beta testers, this feature will probably first be integrated into an official update for all WhatsApp users. But even in this case, it is still unclear when Meta Platforms will actually roll this out.
