There are simple tricks that WhatsApp users can use to highlight important text passages in their messages.

WhatsApp users can format text passages differently on the messenger if they wish, thereby emphasizing them. They use this to mark important information, for example. This is possible on both iOS and Android. To do this, it is sufficient to set special characters in the desired places.

Italic, bold and strikethrough

Users use an underscore to italicize individual words or a passage of text, for example to mark a quote. It must enclose the selected text on both sides. Example: “Hello, my name is _Max_.” Here “Max” would be written in italics.

Asterisks are used to write a selected passage in bold instead and thus to emphasize it. Example: “You *didn’t* do it!” In this case, the “not” would be highlighted in bold.

Users can also cross out words, for example if they want to reschedule an appointment with a friend. The tilde helps with this. Example: “You, ~Saturday~ can’t work. Shall we meet on Sunday?” The “Saturday” would thus be crossed out.

Text modules can also be highlighted in monospace. WhatsApp will then display a non-proportional font. In contrast to the font otherwise used, all the characters shown here have a fixed width. For example, an “i” normally takes up less space in a message than an “o”. To do this, users set three grave symbols. Example: “Look, I can write in “`Monospace“`.” Accordingly, “Monospace” would visually stand out from the rest of the message.

Adjust font size

Users can also combine these options. Example: “I don’t want to play ~Minecraft~. Let’s play *FIFA* for a game.” Here “Minecraft” would be crossed out and “FIFA” would be in bold.

It is also possible to change the font size of messages on your own device. Android users choose between the options “Large”, “Medium” and “Small” via “Settings”, “Chats” and then “Font size”. The size can also be adjusted in the general settings of the smartphone. iOS users adjust the iPhone settings under “Display & Brightness” and under “Accessibility”.
