what we know after the discovery of the bodies of two babies in Rumilly

Line Bonnet-Mathis, the public prosecutor of Annecy revealed on Friday some elements surrounding the discovery on Sunday January 1, 2023 of the bodies of two babies
, in an apartment in Rumilly (Haute-Savoie). Called by a woman “to communicate his suicidal intentions”, the gendarmes who arrived on the spot noted the presence of “two remains swaddled in a suitcase”. According to the neighborhood, the apartment was occupied by four people: two adults and two children. A judicial investigation has been opened into the counts of murder of a minor under the age of 15.

Compulsory hospitalization

To the military by telephone, the alleged mother, aged 35, had “indicated having the bodies of two dead babies at his home”. Probably unstable and shocked, the prosecution specifies that “Given his state of health, this person was hospitalized under duress. She is still hospitalized to this day and could not be heard by the investigators.”

An open investigation and autopsies performed

The Annecy prosecutor’s office also specifies that it has opened “a judicial investigation under the qualification of murder of a 15-year-old minor” with some “investigations entrusted to the Annecy research brigade and to the Chambéry research section with the support of the Annecy criminal identification unit”.

Autopsies were performed on January 4, 2023 at the Forensic Institute of Grenoble. The date of the deaths and their cause could not be determined according to the first elements observed on the spot by the investigators. On the estimated age of the two bodies found, the prosecution specifies: “the presence of an umbilical cord on one of the two bodies makes it possible to suppose however that it was about a newborn”.

Two other children in this family

The couple’s two children are aged two and one, born in 2020 and 2021. They were entrusted and placed thanks to the child welfare services.

The heard companion

The young woman who warned the emergency services seemed to be alone at her home since her companion since 2019 “was abroad since 13 December 2022” explains the floor. Nevertheless, on his return to France on January 5, he “was placed in police custody for concealment of a corpse (…). No charge was brought against him and his police custody was terminated” Friday at midday.

“It’s shocking and above all we don’t understand”

In this HLM building in the Cité de la Salle in Rumilly, the inhabitants present this Friday morning are struggling to realize the horror of the discovery made on Sunday January 1, 2023 in this third-floor apartment. The front door is now sealed by gendarmerie investigators. It can be read there that the instruction concerns a “aggravated intentional homicide”.

When asked about the presumed parents of these babies, some speak of a “normal family” with two other young children. A neighbor still mentions “regular arguments”. The couple would have arrived in this accommodation in Rumilly two or three years ago depending on the neighborhood. Few people really seem to know them.
