What the Tegernsee Mountain Film Festival 2024 has to offer – Munich

There is always a good reason to go to Tegernsee. Some people want to go to forest and lake festivals in summer, others want to go hiking in the mountains on beautiful autumn days, to the Fockenstein, Wallberg or Hirschberg. In October, the Tegernsee Mountain Film Festival also attracts visitors, which shows sports or nature films, portraits or reports from the world of the mountains over a total of five days.

There are a total of 85 films that will be shown in five halls in the center of the city of Tegernsee, including the Quirinal, Medius and Ludwig Thoma halls. The festival also has its own cinema tent in the centrally located Kurgarten.

There will be a film program for children on three mornings or a themed evening by the German Alpine Club on October 18th, where films about young mountaineers will be on the program. Afterwards, there will be a discussion about the sense and nonsense of elite support. In honor of Otto Guggenbichler, who initiated the festival and would have turned 100 in May, three of his best films will be shown over two days.

The festival opens with a filmic double portrait of the couple Daniela and Robert Jasper. The two have been a rope team for 30 years, both on the mountain and privately. They have two children and would have a typical mountaineering relationship: “It’s constantly up and down,” she says. When her husband becomes seriously ill and is in the hospital, this “peak love” (as the film is titled) is put to a severe test. The Jasper couple in Tegernsee want to prove that things can look up again after this low point: They will present their film in person.

From the Alps to the Atlas Mountains

There are mountains all over the world, as well as people who want to climb their peaks. That’s why audiences can look forward to films from the Alps or Andes, from the Karakoram or Himalayas, from Patagonia or the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa. It even goes as far as the Southern Ocean: The Australian film “The Great White Whale” shows a group of adventurers who want to climb a snow-covered and still active volcanic massif. In the German film “Disco Fox,” six young female climbers travel into the wilderness of Greenland and grow together as a team during their trip.

Even before Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023, the film “Reel Rock: Resistance Climbing” was made, in which an American writer meets Palestinian climbers in the West Bank.

Two films from or about Iran will be shown in the cinema tent on October 17th: “Climbing Iran” portrays an Iranian climber who wants to open up new routes. “Shouhare Iran Khanoum” shows two women living on a remote mountain with their husband and eleven children.

The awards ceremony will take place on the evening of October 21st in the Baroque Hall of the Tegernsee High School. Awards will be given out in the three categories “Mountain Adventure Space”, “Mountain Natural Space” and “Mountain Habitat”.
