What is the best time to water the tomatoes?

Two privileged moments

If there are two times during the day that lend themselves to watering tomatoes, it is morning and evening. If you’re up early, good for your tomatoes. Because it is better to get up early to give them something to drink.

In this way, in fact, the water will have all the time to penetrate the earth in depth. The tomatoes will thus receive the water ration they need. By choosing the early morning to water your tomatoes, you also give their leaves time to dry. What is important for the growth and health of these vegetables.

In summer, when it is very hot, it is even recommended to irrigate your tomato plants at dawn. So you have to be ready to water them from 5 or 6 in the morningbefore the sun’s rays begin to heat the earth.

You can also wait until the sun has set. By watering the tomatoes around 9 p.m.for example, the water will have all night to seep into the ground and water the vegetables.

Of course, such watering schedules must be adapted to the season and the climate of the region in which you live. If even in summer the heat there is relatively moderate, you can postpone the time of watering a little.

In this case, instead of watering between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., you can give yourself two extra hours at the start of the day. You can therefore water, without risk for the tomatoes, until around 8 am.

Other periods not recommended

You have understood it, it is better not to take out the watering can when it is hot outside. Indeed, the water that you are going to sprinkle on the squares of tomatoes will not be very useful to them.

Under the effect of a blazing sun, this water will indeed partially evaporate or dry on the ground. No need to waste water, especially in summer, when it becomes precious.

Indeed, even if you use the same amount of water, about a liter, as in the morning or in the evening, the tomatoes will only receive part of it. Not enough, in any case, to become the beautiful, juicy vegetables you expect.

And whether you prefer the morning or the evening, don’t water the tomatoes themselves or their leaves. Soak the ground with water which will eventually reach the roots. In effect, it’s the roots that need to be watered.

As for the frequency of watering, it depends on the nature of the soil, the climate and the place where you grow the tomatoes.
