What are the plans to bring Strasbourg closer to water?

City of water, Strasbourg is crossed by the Rhine, its tributaries and many canals. If these waterways have shaped the city in the past, the future that the municipality intends to grant them is not to be outdone. It intends to continue the work already carried out by the former municipal team but wishes to change scale and extend it to the whole of the Eurometropolis. For this, it has just signed a new agreement with
French waterways (VNF) for the period 2021 to 2026.

The idea remains of course to strengthen the daily links of the population with its channels. But also to enhance the river heritage, to promote its attractiveness, to develop economic activities, without forgetting the uses of leisure … Several studies are envisaged. But the common thread of this partnership with VNF is based on the preservation of the environment, the desire “for an eco-responsible change in river transport” and its uses ensures the city, whether for freight or for tourism.

Projects for this year

Other projects are on the table and some should see the light of day this year. Enough to limit the arrival of trucks in the city center, as has been done since 2018 and the creation of a logistical base for transshipment on waterways, Quai des Pêcheurs. A development which, moreover, is the subject of a very special study because it would be a real visual and sometimes functional inconvenience, as the association of residents of the Fisherman’s Quay bitterly regrets and which has not ceased to alert the town hall . Aware of the situation, Mayor Jeanne Barseghian confirms that very quickly “a feasibility study aimed at improving landscape integration” of this transshipment platform will be launched.

More spectacular, a floating terrace where it will be possible to eat, should be set up for this spring, quai Kléber. As for the “urban swimming” project, a sort of swimming pool in the Ill, mentioned for years but never carried out, it remains topical. Two sites could even receive such a development. All this is under consideration, says the city. But no false joy, however feasible, this project will not be ready for next summer. But at least one thing is certain, we know he did not fall into the water.
