West Bank: Nablus becomes “lion’s den” – Politics

Of

Peter Münch, Nablus

The alleys in the Balata refugee camp in Nablus are narrow, bumpy and spanned by a tangle of cables and clotheslines. Houses that used to be one-story grow skyward with their superstructures. Posters everywhere on the walls showing young guys with guns. Martyr cult by the meter. But not only such colorful banners can be seen on the facades, but also hundreds of bullet holes, which refer to countless firefights and to the fact that the Israeli army has a new enemy in its mostly nightly raids in Nablus: Arin al-Asud calls himself the militia, “The Lion’s Den”.
