It was 2014 when University of Washington glaciologist Ian Joughin in the journal Science a frightening realization explained: On the basis of detailed topographic maps, he had simulated how the retreat of the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica could develop. This is also known as the doomsday glacier because it retreats particularly quickly. If it melted completely, the world’s oceans would rise by 65 centimeters over centuries.
