Weather forecast for the coming week: marked cold, towards new risks of snow in the plain?

It’s a cold week that we’re going to have to endure, perhaps one of the coldest this winter. The northeast, continental wind will bring us very low temperatures, about 5°C below average, and frosts, sometimes severe.

A cold Monday

Monday, the cold is general. The sky is often very cloudy. Some flakes are possible, between the east and the center of the country, as well as near the Pyrenees. In Corsica, powerful showers are expected. The breeze is sensitive, and the Mistral and Tramontane turbulent, accentuating the feeling of cold, even icy in the wind.

Tuesday, the cold will persist

Tuesday, the situation will not change with the maintenance of cold weather, and still some possible snowflakes from the east in the center of the country and heavy showers in Corsica. In the morning, it will snow a lot from Queyras to the Mercantour massif.

Wednesday, still cold and cloudy

We will remain under the influence of a cold northeast wind with generally very cloudy skies. The risk of showers will persist in Corsica. During the night from Wednesday to Thursday, snow showers could descend from the North Sea and reach the neighboring regions of the English Channel.

Thursday degradation: towards a risk of snow in the plain?

From Thursday, the reliability of the situation decreases. Indeed, on Thursday, the British anticyclone should retreat towards the near Atlantic and allow a disturbance descending from the North Sea to pass over France. In this context, it cannot be ruled out that a snowfall could occur on the plains in certain regions, without knowing which seem to be the most threatened for the moment. But as the deadline is still far away, for the moment we are talking about a simple risk. What is certain, however, is that the mistral and the tramontane will rise again in the southeast, reaching 100 km / h in gusts.

Friday, towards a new reinforcement of the cold?

After the passage of the disturbance on Thursday, the Atlantic high could once again extend towards northern Europe. As a result, the north-easterly, continental wind could pick up over France, bringing drier weather again. After gaining 1 to 2°C on Thursday compared to Wednesday while remaining low for the season, temperatures could drop again next Friday.

Will the cold wave thresholds be reached?

Throughout the week it will be cold. The frosts will be widespread, but a priori not too excessive due to the clouds and the wind with -5 to -1°C in the morning. In the afternoon, it will be cold, especially from the northeast to the southwest. But the cold wave thresholds will not be reached, despite low maximums, between 2 and 5°C from Strasbourg to Toulouse and Lyon. In the west, the highs will range from 4 to 7°C and 8°C near the Mediterranean. Temperatures will show values 5°C below normal for the season on average.

Consolidation of the snowpack in the mountains and reduction of the avalanche risk

The heavy falls of the past few days and the cold of next week are excellent news for all our mountain ranges. The snowpack, well consolidated, will gradually limit the risk of avalanches.
