“we have to make films so that they come out in theaters” argues Sean Baker, after receiving the Palme d’Or for “Anora”

This live is over.

It’s the moment of truth on the Croisette. The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is coming to an end with the closing ceremony, hosted by Camille Cottin and to be followed on France 2. After ten days of competition, the jury gathered around Greta Gerwig presents its prizes. The first prizes were awarded, including the screenplay prize awarded to Frenchwoman Coralie Fargeat for The Substance. Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon and Selena Gomez received the Female Ensemble Performance Award for Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard. The film also won the jury prize. It is Anoraby the American Sean Baker, who won the Palme d’Or.

No big favorite on the horizon. Among the 22 films viewed by the jury, it is difficult to single out a big favorite. If the much awaited Megalopolis by Francis Ford Coppola was particularly divided, other films stood out: The Substance, by the Frenchwoman Coralie Fargeat, Anoraby the American Sean Baker, Emilia Perez, by Jacques Audiard, All We Imagine as Lightby the Indian Payal Kapadia, or Caught by the Tidesby the Chinese Jia Zhang-Ke.

George Lucas honored. American actress Meryl Streep was celebrated during the opening ceremony. The director and producer George Lucas will receive an honorary Palme d’Or, “a special award that means a lot to [lui], did he declare. The creator of the universe Star Wars East “one of the greatest personalities of contemporary cinema, a man with an extraordinary career who combines great spectacle with innovation, mythology with modernity and cinephilia with technology”assures the Festival.

The Palme d’Or to close the fortnight. Last year, the animated film from Pixar studios, Elementary, closed the 76th edition. This year, the Festival has decided to screen, just after the closing ceremony, the film which will have received the Palme d’Or from the president of the jury.
