Germany celebrates its first medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo: Tina Punzel and Lena Hentschel won the bronze medal in synchronized jumping from the 3-meter board on Sunday (July 25th, 2021) with a nervous performance. As expected, gold went to the Chinese women Tingmao Shi and Han Wang. Canadians Jennifer Abel and Melissa Citrini Beaulieu jumped to silver.

The decision was only made at the last jump: Tina Punzel from Dresden and Lena Hentschel from Berlin had to submit and then tremble. Because the Italian duo failed, the two Germans, who had become European champions in Budapest in May, celebrated bronze after a competition without any major blunders.

Five strong jumps from Punzel / Hentschel

Punzel and Hentschel started the competition with a successful dolphin head jump, got 48.60 points and were fourth after the first of five rounds. The backward dive was also successful, albeit not to perfection. Bronze was only two points away after the two relatively easy jumps.

After that the jumps became more demanding, China moved on and off, gold was awarded. Behind them an exciting battle for the medals broke out. And Germany was right in the middle. Punzel and Hentschel dived in synchronously after the jump in the helix and the two and a half Auerbach somersaults and moved up to fourth place before the final, decisive jump. The Germans were just 78 hundredths of a point behind the two Italians.

In the last jump, the immersion phase of the only 20-year-old Hentschel was not quite optimal, with 64 points they had to tremble – and then they were lucky that Italy failed.
