High cholesterol often goes unnoticed for a long time, but certain symptoms can indicate problems. There are six physical signs you should take seriously.

Cholesterol is a raw material that is necessary for the human body. Every cell in the body needs cholesterol because it is an important component of the cell membrane and is involved in the formation of certain hormones and the maintenance of nerve functions. If there is an excess of cholesterol in the blood and blood vessel walls, serious health problems can arise due to arteriosclerosis. This increases the risk of a stroke or heart attack. However, high cholesterol levels often go unnoticed by those affected for a long time. However, if there has been an excess of cholesterol for years, various symptoms can eventually appear.

High cholesterol levels: Six physical symptoms can be signs

The body’s need for cholesterol is largely met by itself, while the smaller part is absorbed through food. The cholesterol is then transported from the liver to the cells via the blood. A distinction is made between LDL and HDL cholesterol: the former is called “bad” cholesterol, in contrast to HDL cholesterol. This is because it is deposited in the blood vessels and thus increases the risk of cardiovascular disease – while the “good” HDL cholesterol even helps to transport excess LDL cholesterol away.

If LDL cholesterol levels are elevated, those affected usually do not initially experience any pain or discomfort. However, skin changes on the arms, legs, buttocks and eyelids can be a warning sign. Elevated cholesterol levels can therefore often be seen on the face. If cholesterol levels are elevated over a long period of time, the following physical symptoms can occur, which should not be ignored:

  • Tightness in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • dizziness
  • Disturbances of consciousness
  • Sore legs
  • Visual disturbances

Prevent high cholesterol levels: healthy lifestyle, little alcohol, no excess weight

To prevent high cholesterol levels and prevent them from occurring in the first place, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes balanced nutrition and avoiding excess weight. You should also only consume a small amount of alcohol and do endurance sports such as swimming, cycling or Nordic walking. Smokers are also advised to stop smoking.
