Washington announces $725 million in additional military aid to Ukraine

The United States will provide 725 million dollars (about 745 million euros) additional military aid to Ukraine for its defense, announced the Pentagon and the State Department.

“This payment will bring total U.S. military assistance to Ukraine to an unprecedented $18.3 billion+” since Joe Biden took office, said the head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken in a press release.

The Pentagon details that the new batch promised by Washington includes in particular ammunition from Himars, a rocket launcher mounted on light armored vehicles which plays an important role in the Ukrainian counter-offensives in the east and south of the country.

Also included are more than 23,000 artillery shells, 5,000 remotely operated anti-armour mines, 5,000 anti-tank weapons and 200 Humvee transport vehicles.

Joe Biden promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday “to continue to provide Ukraine with what it needs to defend itself, including advanced systems” anti-aircraft defense.

The United States has already pledged advanced surface-to-air missile batteries: two for delivery in the coming weeks or months, and six more as part of longer-term aid.

“Air defense capabilities have been and will continue to be a US priority for Ukraine”said the Pentagon in its press release on Friday.
