Seven books, seven seasons – in ten years: HBO Max, a streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery, announced that it would remake all Harry Potter novels. Warner Bros. have long wanted to create more projects with one of the best-selling book series of all time. Rowling had approved a play adaptation and a theme park attraction, but not yet new films or even a television series.
In 1997, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was released, the first volume in the saga about the magic student and the magical world of the magic school Hogwarts. With more than 500 million books sold in around 80 languages, Harry Potter is the most successful book series in the world.
Eight feature films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson followed between 2001 and 2011. It was only in 2022 that HBO Max released the one and a half hour special “Return to Hogwarts” for the 20th anniversary, in which many of the actors return to the set and remember the shooting.
The Harry Potter brand has also spawned a number of successful products and spin-offs: In February, in partnership with Salt Lake City-based Avalanche Software, Warner Bros. released the highly anticipated Hogwarts Legacy, a role-playing game based on the Potter -World based. The series has also spawned a stage production, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
For Warner Bros., the new series is part of a new streaming service strategy: HBO Max will only be called Max in the future. And there not only the new Harry Potter seasons are to be published, but also a prequel to the successful series “Game of Thrones” entitled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. In addition, Warner Bros. owns rights to the Lord of the Rings material and superhero stories such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
