Steve McQueen’s slave drama “12 Years a Slave” won the 2014 Oscar for best picture. For his new film project “Blitz”, the director brings Saoirse Ronan on board as the leading actress.

British director Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) has found a leading actress for his planned war film “Blitz”. Actress Saoirse Ronan (28), who has been nominated for an Oscar four times, is part of the ensemble cast, as the streaming provider Apple TV + announced.

The film, based on a script by McQueen, revolves around a group of Londoners witnessing the “Blitz” of the German Luftwaffe bombing of the British capital during World War II. According to Variety and Deadline.com, filming is scheduled to begin this year. Other actors are not yet known.

Ronan received her first Oscar nomination as a teenager for her supporting role in the 2008 drama film Atonement. Other nominations followed for Brooklyn (2016), Lady Bird (2018) and Little Women (2020). She was last seen in the films “Ammonite” and “The French Dispatch”.

McQueen’s slave drama “12 Years a Slave” won three Oscars in 2014, including the top trophy for best picture. In 2018 he brought the thriller drama “Widows – Tödliche Widwen” to the screen. In 2020 he directed the award-winning BBC series Small Axe.
