At least seven people were killed by Russian shelling in the center of the city of Cherson, and according to Ukrainian sources, almost 60 were injured. The Russian army had withdrawn from Cherson in the autumn.

According to Ukrainian sources, seven people were killed and 58 others injured when Russian shelling hit the center of the city of Cherson. According to the deputy chief of the presidential administration in Kyiv, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, in the short message service Telegram, there are 18 seriously injured.

Tymoshenko published pictures of the dead on his Telegram channel. According to Ukrainian sources, Russian troops are still shelling the city from other parts of the occupied Kherson region. Most of the area is still controlled by Russian troops. Russia had annexed the Cherson region in violation of international law, but left the city of the same name in the fall and withdrew. Moscow sees the entire region as part of Russia.

Selenskyj speaks of an act of terrorism

Tymoshenko went on to say that many people were out on the streets on Saturday because of the weekend. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as another Russian act of terrorism. “This is the real life of Ukraine and Ukrainians,” he said. There are no military targets there, stressed Zelenskyy. This isn’t a war. “This is terror, this is killing for the sake of intimidation and pleasure.”

Ukrainian troops took the city of Cherson in the fall after the Russian forces withdrew. The Russian occupiers retreated to the other side of the Dnipro River.

Report: Preparations for attack from Belarus

In Belarus, according to the US Institute for War Studies (ISW), Russia is continuing to create the conditions for an attack on northern Ukraine. The Ukrainian military also announced that Russia had deployed battalions there. The ISW experts emphasized that such an attack by Belarus is unlikely. Nevertheless, the danger must be taken seriously.

The ISW sees the establishment of a field hospital as an indication that Russia could attack from there. “Field hospitals are not necessary for drills and can be indicative of preparation for combat.” At the beginning of the year, the establishment of such military hospitals in Belarus was also an indication of this – immediately before the start of the great Russian invasion.

Lukashenko arrived in Moscow

In Belarus, ruler Alexander Lukashenko had made his military bases available for the attacks on Ukraine. Lukashenko is politically and financially dependent on Moscow. Ukraine sees Belarus as a war party. Lukashenko, on the other hand, emphasizes that his country is not taking part in the war. On Saturday he arrived in Moscow for a new visit.
