For years there was a persistent legend that there was a crocodile under the floor of a British classroom. Until it’s actually found.

At Ysgol Bodringallt Primary School in Ystrad, Wales, there was a legend that there was a being buried under the school building in love. Then, two years ago, a 120-year-old crocodile skeleton was found under the floor of a classroom during renovations. The BBC reports, citing the municipality of Rhondda, in which the village is located. Now the saltwater crocodile has been restored and exhibited in the school.

“I had heard the story that parents and school staff had buried a crocodile under the school sometime between the two world wars,” said principal Dr. Neil Pike then to the BBC. But he thought that was a myth and didn’t pursue the story any further.

origin unclear

The origin of the skeleton and why it was buried under the floor of a school in South Wales remains unclear. However, locals say that a man returning from WWI brought the animal back to school as a curious souvenir. It is said to have been on display at first, but was then hidden to protect it as World War II ensued.

Restored for two years

The restoration was undertaken by the company Pure Conservation, which specializes in preserving natural history finds. The experts there estimated that the crocodile must have come from the 19th century.

The skeleton was first frozen to remove vermin and then inspected for hazardous materials before being cleaned, vacuumed and then repaired. The restoration was completed in December and the crocodile is now on display in the primary school.

The kids loved it

“The story of the crocodile at Ysgol Bodringallt is absolutely incredible – it was the last thing workers expected when they found it under a classroom,” Councilor Joy Rosser told the BBC. “I am delighted that the restoration is now complete and the legendary crocodile, previously only known from rumors, can now be proudly displayed.” It was fantastic to see the enthusiastic faces of the students.
