According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukraine has launched its long-awaited counter-offensive. “This is confirmed by the deployment of the strategic reserve,” Putin told a conference in Sochi on Friday, adding that Ukrainian soldiers had not achieved their goals in any sector. Putin and a spokesman for the Russian military spoke of high losses in Ukraine. Russian military bloggers reported sightings of German and US-made tanks. A Ukrainian statement was not available. For its part, the Ukrainian army released footage on Friday that allegedly showed an attack on a Russian artillery brigade near the town of Bakhmut. Independent reporting from the front is hardly possible. Since the beginning of the week, Russia has declared the Ukrainian offensive open, while the government in Kyiv denies this and says it will not announce the start, as this video released on Sunday should make clear.
