When the Federal President got out of the car in Koryukivka in northern Ukraine, the air raid alarm went off once, twice, unmistakably. Frank-Walter Steinmeier had wanted to visit the Historical Museum in order to talk to the people of the city against the backdrop of German history, so to speak. Almost 7000 people were murdered in Koryukivka during the German occupation and the place was burned down, it was one of the worst crimes against the non-Jewish civilian population in Europe. And hardly anyone knows about it.
