Violence on holiday island
Mallorca: Suspect arrested after attacks on Germans
A man brutally attacks two German holidaymakers on Mallorca – now a suspect has been arrested. Is hatred the motive?
After two brutal attacks on Germans on Mallorca, a suspect has been arrested. The 29-year-old Mallorcan is accused of attempted murder, among other things, the police on the Spanish holiday island said. Just on Friday, he is said to have attacked a 32-year-old on the nudist beach Playa del Mago in the municipality of Calvià in the southwest Mallorca off a cliff. According to police reports, the victim fell ten to twelve meters, but was lucky and escaped with bruises and abrasions.
In August, the alleged perpetrator is said to have attacked another bather from Germany on the same beach, first with a stone and then with a hammer. The victim was taken to hospital but was released after a few days. In both cases, the perpetrator escaped. On Friday, however, eyewitnesses were able to take photos of both the alleged attacker and his car.
The investigating police unit, Guardia Civil, says it suspects hate attacks and is investigating whether the suspect was targeting holidaymakers or homosexuals. A judge ordered pre-trial detention shortly after the arrest, it said.
