Video: Young archer takes aim at gold

STORY: This is Atheer al-Husaini, 17 years old, archer, and she has a big goal: win gold for Yemen at the upcoming Olympic Games. Al-Husaini was spotted as a promising talent in 2021. There she won first place in the archery tournament in Yemen. “I won this gold medal at my first local championship. This is the participation badge for the championship in Sharjah, which was my first participation abroad. This is the certificate for first place at the local women’s archery championship and that is the trophy for that first place.” Archery is a relatively new sport in Yemen. Only four indoor archery tournaments have been organized so far. Women in particular are confronted with numerous challenges when practicing sport. For example, there is not always enough and the right equipment or training opportunities. “For the most part, society doesn’t accept women’s participation in sport, but thank God family support plays a big part. For me, it’s accepted by my family because they’re athletes themselves.” The Olympic Games will be held in Paris in 2024. Atheer Al-Husaini wants to realize her big dream there.
