Video: Western Australia: Search for radioactive capsule continues

STORY: The search for a tiny radioactive capsule missing in Western Australia has intensified. The Australian Nuclear Safety Agency said on Tuesday that it was taking part in the search and sent a team with special equipment. The capsule with a diameter of only around 6 millimeters contains radioactive cesium-137. It had been entrusted to a special transport by the mining company Rio Tinto. She is believed to have fallen from a lorry traveling from Newman to Perth’s north-east suburbs. That is a distance of around 1,200 kilometers. Rio Tinto apologized Monday for the loss, which occurred on an unknown date within the past two weeks. Western Australia’s top health official, Andrew Robertson, warned on Friday that prolonged exposure to the capsule could result in radiation damage. However, experts also informed that passing the capsule quickly is associated with a relatively low health risk.
