Video: “We don’t need flowers” – Demo for Women’s Day in Berlin

STORY: Women’s Day mobilization on Wednesday was not only in Berlin, where March 8th is now a real public holiday. And so in the federal capital, various alliances invited to parade through the streets, including the Verdi service union. Under the motto “Now more than ever”, the organized a nationwide day of action for employees in social and educational services. Against the background of the ongoing collective bargaining round, Verdi also called for warning strikes in daycare centers and social facilities. A teacher summarized the problem as follows: “If the Educators no longer want to, the economy stops rolling. We don’t feel taken seriously. We would like to be able to work properly. We want the children to be tidy… we work in a day-care center. We want the children to be treated decently. We are at a point where we feel that we can no longer treat children humanely. They are only kept. And we think that’s really terrible.” According to Verdi, the social sector, with 83 percent of the workforce being female, is a real women’s domain. And in day-care centers or advice centers, the working conditions are often precarious due to fixed-term or part-time work. In addition, there is often a lack of financial recognition. But so are others Concerns were taken to the streets on Wednesday: “I think, definitely, solidarity with women in Iran and, yes, also support queer people. I think those are the two points.” “Because we also say very clearly that climate change is also a feminist issue, i.e. preventing climate change, because women in particular, but also other minority groups, are particularly affected by climate change. And that’s why we’re here today to draw attention to the referendum, to win a few more people for our cause and of course to support the day here.” With International Women’s Day, which came into being before the First World War was called, the aim is to draw attention to women’s rights and equality worldwide.
