STORY: NASA’s Orion spacecraft completed a flight around the moon on Monday, at an altitude of 130 km above the lunar surface. According to NASA, the probe reached a speed of more than 8,000 kilometers per hour. While orbiting the moon, Orion temporarily lost communication with Earth, but was able to reconnect via NASA’s Deep Space Network. The probe is scheduled to enter a distant orbit on Friday that will take it around 40,000 miles past the moon before returning to Earth. The flight is part of NASA’s Artemis I mission. In the coming years, the US space agency also wants to send people to the moon again. Overall, the flights to the moon are also seen in preparation for a future Mars mission.
