Video: Supreme Court: Israel’s interior minister must not stay

STORY: The Israeli government is once again in crisis mode. The Supreme Court ruled that Israeli Interior Minister Arje Deri cannot take office. According to the country’s top judges, the head of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party has been barred from a ministerial post because he was given a suspended sentence last year for tax offenses. The verdict is seen as a serious blow to the new Netanyahu government. Yair Lapid, Leader of the Opposition: “If Arje Deri is not sacked, the government is breaking the law. A government that does not abide by the law is illegal and cannot require citizens to abide by the law. If Arje Deri If they are not released, we will have an unprecedented constitutional crisis. And then the country will no longer be a democracy and the rule of law.” As a result of the court ruling, it is now feared that the new justice minister could go even faster with his plans to weaken the Supreme Court. In recent weeks, tens of thousands of people in Israel have taken to the streets against the government’s plans. Another large demonstration is planned in Tel Aviv for the weekend.
