O-Ton Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal President: “You can imagine, ladies and gentlemen, President Herzog and I, we are both happy and relieved that shortly before this commemoration and shortly before this state visit, there was an understanding between the bereaved and of the German Federal Government about historical clarification about recognition and compensation. We both welcome the result of the talks. And despite all this I know well that nothing can heal the deep wounds from the 50 years. But I am convinced that after the wounds that have now been found understanding and in common remembrance we will come together again. That it took 50 years to reach this understanding, now, in the last few days, that is indeed shameful. And that is why I also expressed in my preliminary remarks: I feel very aware and everyone who has been involved in discussions over the last few days is very aware that we are dealing with the triple understanding ng, firstly about the Commission of Historians, secondly about what I will say tomorrow in the course of the speech about the part of German responsibility, and thirdly with the compensation that not all wounds can of course be healed with this understanding.”
