“Smash and grab” on Black Friday

That is not how the consumer festival day “Black Friday” was actually meant. In the USA, the police had to increase their presence in shopping centers because of the increasing number of lightning break-ins in connection with the discount battle, in English “smash and grab”. Surveillance videos document the attacks. Masked figures crowd into the shop and run away with bags full of goods. The getaway car is already waiting outside. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to local media that a California branch of the Italian luxury goods retailer Bottega Veneta was robbed on Friday. This designer jeans store also had to close its doors after a robbery on Friday evening. Do what you can, says Louis Schillace of Westfield Century City – Mall in LA: “We are closely monitoring the robberies across the country. We have a good relationship with the LAPD and local authorities to make sure we are well prepared are.” The brash robberies began earlier this week in upscale stores. Now they are spreading to cheaper stores as well. In Chicago, three stores were looted in just an hour on Black Friday. First Footlocker, then North Face, and a telecommunications provider. Robbers carried sledgehammers, crowbars, and other tools from a California hardware store. The rise in the number of raids comes at a time when retailers are trying, on the one hand, to recoup lost sales as a result of the pandemic, and, on the other, to cope with supply bottlenecks. The police are increasing their presence – so far this has not deterred the robbers.
