Video: Second wave of layoffs at Amazon – 9000 jobs gone

STORY: As the next major US technology company, Amazon is once again kicking out thousands of employees. The online retailer announced on Monday that it would cut 9,000 jobs. In recent years, the workforce has grown significantly, explained Amazon boss Andy Jassy in a statement. In view of the uncertain economic situation and the uncertain future, it was decided to reduce costs and staff. The cloud division AWS, the advertising department and the live streaming service Twitch are particularly affected. The group had already cut 18,000 jobs at the beginning of the year due to the gloomy economic prospects. Together with the current wave of layoffs, around nine percent of the previously around 300,000 employees in Amazon administration have to resign. Other tech giants had also announced that they would be cutting jobs after a wave of recruitment during the pandemic, such as Microsoft, Salesforce, Alphabet and Facebook’s parent company Meta. According to the website Layoffs.fyi, around 290,000 employees in the sector have lost their jobs in the USA alone since the beginning of 2022. That doesn’t even include the recent layoffs at Amazon.
