Sahara dust blows through Spain

STORY: Spain in orange. On Tuesday night, the storm Celia covered many cities on the Iberian Peninsula with fine Saharan dust, such as here in Madrid. “It’s pretty uncomfortable,” says jogger Jaqueline Yarez, “but that’s nature, you can’t do anything about it.” The 75-year-old Jorse Maria Carpintero is also struggling with the impaired air quality. “I have problems with my lungs, that’s why it gives me a lot of problems, I usually never take off the mask here either”. After a very dry and warm winter, strong wind and heavy rain warnings have now been issued in 11 provinces across the country. According to the Spanish weather agency AEMET, the storm is expected to last until Thursday.
