Rescue ship is looking for a safe harbor

The past few days have been full of work for the crew of the “Sea-Watch 3”. In five missions since Christmas Eve, almost 450 migrants have been saved from drowning in the Mediterranean. These recordings of the rescue operations were made available by the private aid organization Sea-Watch. Now the crew is waiting to be assigned a port to bring the rescued ashore. Among them are said to be numerous children and unaccompanied minors. They all need a safe haven, says Sea-Watch. In the past, the ships of private sea rescue organizations often had to wait days for a port in Europe to be assigned. The sea rescuers refuse to bring the refugees to Libya, from where many people make the crossing. There – so the fear – they face jail and torture. On Christmas days the “Sea-Eye 4” and the “Ocean Viking” were allowed to call at Sicily with a total of more than 300 refugees after several days of waiting. The journey across the Mediterranean is one of the most dangerous escape routes in the world. According to the “International Organization for Migration”, more than 1,800 people have died or are missing during the crossing this year. The number of unreported cases is likely to be much higher.
