STORY: According to the re-elected head of state Xi Jinping, China must invest in its security in order to become a “great wall of steel”. Closing the annual parliamentary session Monday, Xi said security is the basis for development and stability, and the prerequisite for prosperity. “We will spare no effort to live up to the times, our history and the people, and make the contribution that our generation deserves in building a strong nation and realizing national rejuvenation.” In his first speech of his third term as head of state, Xi also called for more autonomy in science and technology. The call comes as the US continues to block China’s access to chip manufacturing facilities and other cutting-edge technologies. Referring to Taiwan, Xi said China must resist independence and secessionist moves, as well as interference from outside forces. The ruling Communist Party is expected to increase its influence on security issues after Xi filled key political positions with close confidants.
