Video: Pistorius on NATO’s eastern flank: “We face up to this obligation without ifs or buts”

STORY: Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Tuesday during a visit to the Bundeswehr contingent of the NATO combat group in Lithuania. During the visit during an exercise, the SPD politician, who had already arrived on Monday, again emphasized the attitude of the federal government in connection with the obligations in the context of NATO’s eastern flank: “But that’s basically true. Freedom will be here again more defended and also the security of NATO territory. I’ve said that often in recent weeks. Until 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany was the eastern flank. Our security was guaranteed by NATO and its allies. And today it’s Poland, the Baltic States and other countries on the eastern flank. And that’s why we have the same obligation today to guarantee this protection as NATO did for us back then and we face up to this obligation without any ifs or buts.” Pistorius was able to get a personal impression of the troops on site. The minister vehemently rejected allegations that Germany was not getting enough involved: “As a framework nation, we are in a very, very good position that I am stepping too close to someone here maybe read it. We can really be very satisfied. We are clearly here with very, very strong forces. None of the other framework nations has more than we have here, as far as I can see and, above all, so consistently. Just the fact of our command post As I said, the Lithuanian side expressly shares and welcomes this from a military point of view, which is also documented by regular visits here we are doing here. There is absolutely no doubt about the extent to which Germany stands by Lithuania’s side as a framework nation don’t change anything.” As a reaction to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Germany has had a combat brigade ready to defend Lithuania since the autumn of last year. Around 1,450 soldiers from Germany are currently stationed in the country.
