Video: New Zealand bans TikTok on government devices

STORY: New Zealand has announced it will ban use of the video-sharing app TikTok on devices with access to the country’s parliamentary network. This makes it the latest country to restrict use of the app due to cybersecurity concerns. Concerns have been growing around the world that the Chinese government could access users’ location and contact details through ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for the entire public sector, said Prime Minister Chris Hipkins. However, he expects ministries and parliament to follow the advice of the security authorities. In New Zealand, TikTok will be banned on all devices with access to Parliament’s network until the end of March, a spokesman said. This decision was taken on the advice of security experts and after discussions within the government and with other countries. ByteDance initially did not respond to a request for comment.
