STORY: In Israel, the new government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been sworn in. It includes religious fundamentalists and right-wing nationalists. Some of them oppose a Palestinian state and support the extension of Israeli territory into the occupied West Bank. This had caused unrest among Palestinians and abroad. Israeli President Isaac Herzog also expressed concerns about the new government. A situation in which Israeli citizens face threats because of their identity or values is contrary to the country’s fundamental democratic and ethical principles, he wrote on Twitter on Sunday. Before the swearing-in, Netanyahu had told the Knesset that ending the conflict between Israel and Arabs was the top priority. He had also said that he wanted to govern in the interests of all citizens of Israel. In the parliamentary elections in early November, the bloc he led won 64 of the 120 seats in the Knesset. The 73-year-old has been Prime Minister several times. He is currently on trial on corruption charges. Hundreds of people gathered in front of the parliament in Jerusalem to protest against the inauguration of the new government. They consider some members of the government to be criminals and see the new leadership as a threat to democracy and human rights in the country.
