Video: Mexican ex-minister as alleged drug cartel helper in court

STORY: Drug investigators or drug criminals? A former top Mexican security official is on trial in New York. Genaro Garcia Luna is said to have accepted millions of dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa cartel, according to US prosecutors. Garcia Luna headed the Mexican federal police in the early 2000s and was Minister of Public Security from 2006 to 2012. To keep up appearances, he made some arrests and confiscated drugs, prosecutor Philipp Pilmar said on Monday. In reality, he was on the payroll of ex-drug mogul Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Garcia Luna denies the allegations, his defense attorneys say the witnesses, former cartel members, only wanted to reduce their own sentence and seek revenge for their arrest. During his tenure, Garcia Luna worked closely with US counter-narcotics and intelligence agencies. In 2019 he was arrested in Texas. That same year, El Chapo was sentenced to life imprisonment for drug trafficking and conspiracy to murder.
