Video: Life in prison for shooters of Parkland school massacre

STORY: In the trial of the massacre in Parkland, Florida, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment. He had attacked Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School with a semi-automatic rifle on Valentine’s Day 2018, killing 17 people. The then 19-year-old had previously been expelled from school. Meghan Kelly’s sister, Alaina, was one of the victims. “The first major event of my adult life at 19 was when my sister was shot. And now my early twenties are ending with being told there will be no justice in her memory.” Last month, the jury voted to spare the defendant the death penalty, which drew criticism from many of the bereaved. During the murder trial, the shooter pleaded guilty. As a consequence of the shooting spree, survivors formed a youth protest movement calling for stricter gun control in the United States. The country has the highest rate of private gun ownership in the world. Mass murders by firearms occur again and again in schools.
