Ketanji Brown Jackson becomes the first African American woman to serve on the US Supreme Court

STORY: For the first time since the inception of the Supreme Court, an African American woman has been elected to the US Supreme Court. The Senate on Thursday confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination by a margin of 53 to 47. In addition to the Democrats, three Republicans also voted for Jackson. Majority leader Chuck Schumer spoke of a “big, courageous and important step”. Republican leader Mitch McConnell has described Jackson as a radical left candidate and accused her of including her political views in judgments. The 51-year-old takes over the seat from 83-year-old Stephen Breyer, who is expected to step down in June. The ratio of conservative to liberal justices on the US Supreme Court remains unchanged at six to three.
