Kazakh government resigns after violent protests

Violent protests – that was the response of many people in Kazakhstan to a price increase for LPG. The government of the oil-rich former Soviet state had lifted the cap on prices for LPG – also known as LPG – at the turn of the year. This was less than half the market price. The protests resulted in the government submitting its resignation on Wednesday night. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev accepted the request, his office announced on Wednesday. He had previously tried to calm the people in the country with a video address: There must be “mutual trust and dialogue instead of conflict,” he said. Because of the price controls, gas in Kazakhstan has cost less than petrol for years, which is why many citizens have converted their vehicles to the propane-butane mixture. The government has argued that the comparatively low price is no longer affordable.
