Istanbul: Security forces take action against women’s rights activists


Violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators on International Day against Violence against Women. The police in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul even used tear gas against the demonstrating women’s rights activists. Several thousand people, mostly women, marched with a heavy police presence to Taksim Square in the city center, which was cordoned off with barriers. The protesters demanded that Turkey re-accede to the Istanbul Convention. In March, President Erdogan ordered that the ratification of the convention be repealed. In many other countries around the world, too, thousands of people took part in demonstrations for more women’s rights. The occasion of the rallies was the International Day against Violence against Women, which has been celebrated on November 25 for 40 years.
