Video: Iranian chess player does not return to Iran after threats

STORY: Iranian chess player Sara Khadem arrived in Spain on Tuesday after appearing without a headscarf at a chess tournament in Kazakhstan. Her environment said she had been warned against returning to Iran. Khadem had competed at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan last week without a hijab – a headscarf required by Iran’s strict dress code for women. From her environment it was said that the chess player had received threatening calls. Other callers promised to solve their “problem” if they returned to Iran. Khadem’s family in Iran is also said to have been threatened. Iran’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case. The strict dress codes for women in Iran have become the focus of protests in the wake of recent unrest. In recent months, a number of female athletes have appeared in public without headscarves at competitions abroad.
