STORY: Friday prayers in a mosque in Pakistan – nothing unusual at first glance. But here, in this church in the city of Peshawar, a suicide bomber blew himself up on Monday. More than 100 people were killed, including many police officers who had gathered for midday prayer. The mosque is located in a high-security building, which also houses the provincial police headquarters and a counter-terrorism department. No one initially claimed responsibility for the attack. Police later identified the assassin as a member of a militant network, without giving details. Hundreds of people protested against violence in Peshawar on Friday. “The white flag here is a symbol of peace,” says this woman. “People from all parties come together here without discrimination. We only have one message: we want peace in our province.” The region near the border with Afghanistan has long suffered from attacks by militant Islamists. In terms of death toll, Monday’s attack was the deadliest in Peshawar in a decade.
