Video: Bundestag Vice Kubicki on Reich citizens: security concept sufficient

STORY: This case shook Germany last week. A nationwide search arrested 25 people as members or supporters of an alleged terrorist organization. They are said to have planned a political coup and an armed attack on the Bundestag. Among those arrested is a former AfD member of the Bundestag, who is now in custody. The consequences of the case are currently being discussed. Among other things, it is about how dangerous the so-called Reich citizen scene is and whether the security concept of the Bundestag needs to be revised. Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki considers a coup in Germany by the Reichsbürger movement to be extremely unlikely: “Well, we have a large number of people who are committed to the Reichsbürger scene. Many of them are confused, most of them not criminals. But we have a terrorist scene now that was lifted, that posed a concrete threat to the rule of law. But far from a coup or a coup that could have been successful. That will now emerge from further investigations. They will have to answer in court. Also the democratic constitutional state will deal with that.” The current security precautions in Parliament are sufficient, said Kubicki: “We have a very sophisticated security concept, which I don’t want to explain publicly right now, but the probability of the German Bundestag being invaded from outside is extremely low. And identity checks have also been massively strengthened . That means that former members of parliament or visitors now all have to go through the locks. That means that only active members of parliament can bring weapons with them. But even there – as I said – we reacted to events in the past.” The Bundestag wants to be an open parliament and has around two and a half million visitors a year, said Kubicki. And it should stay that way.
