Alitalia ceases flight operations

The Italian airline Alitalia has ceased its flight operations after almost 75 years. The state-owned line had made losses in recent years. O-TON ANTONELLA, ALITALIA EMPLOYEE: “We are very sad. I worked here for more than 30 years. This is the saddest thing that could have happened. We are all sorry.” OSTON ALITALIA EMPLOYEE: “I can’t speak at all, it feels like my father has died again. All I can say is: It hurts a lot.” O-TON TOMMASO SABATINI, ALITALIA-PILOT: “Leaving this company after 34 years, for which you have worked all your life, which is like a family, is very difficult. I will retire soon, but I am thinking of my colleagues who have to continue working under worse conditions. That’s not nice. ” The new state airline Italia Transporto Aereo, or ITA for short, started operations on Friday. It takes over half of Alitalia’s machines. 2000 of the 11,000 Alitalia employees will also be taken on, but under significantly worse conditions. In recent weeks, many Alitalia employees have therefore taken to the streets.
