In Iraq, the party of the Shiite cleric Moktada al-Sadr won the parliamentary elections by a clear margin. According to the first counts on Monday, his party won over 70 seats. In a televised address, the clergyman announced that he would stand up for peace and stability and take action against corruption. Many people in Iraq are frustrated. The reason is high unemployment, the poor state of the infrastructure, the education and health systems. In addition, many people accuse the elite of getting rich. For these reasons, there had been repeated mass demonstrations in the past few months. Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi had therefore brought the parliamentary election forward.
