Video: 72nd Berlinale – more condensed and clearer

The Berlinale wants to show 260 long and short films this time, divided into nine sections. A drop of 20 percent compared to 2020. In the second year without any real Berlinale atmosphere, the selection of films will be more compact and clear. Just like the number of viewers. But at least people will probably be allowed to come this year. The organizers plan with a 50 percent seat occupancy, access only with 2G +, the duration: 7 instead of 11 days. But even that could change. Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian: “We have yet to receive any cancellations from guests, including ‘Call Jane’, which stars Elizabeth Banks, but we recognize that things may change in three weeks. We are us aware that travel can become more problematic than it is right now.” Parties and receptions are cancelled, but there are brief appearances by the stars on the red carpet. In terms of content, the theme of love dominates. Works such as “Both Sides of the Blade” by French director Claire Denis, in which Juliette Binoche plays a woman who is in a love triangle during the pandemic, signal a turn towards something more emotional about the otherwise political festival. According to Chatrian, this year’s edition is about restoring social ties torn by two years of isolation. “Never have we seen and welcomed so many love stories as this year: crazy, improbable, unexpected, intoxicating love, which is basically what all encounters are about.” Eighteen films compete for the coveted Golden Bear in a slimmed-down competition whose organizers dare to return to live screenings. But that can still change, says managing director Mariette Rissenbeek: “Of course I hope that we can actually continue. As you said, that is not to be taken for granted. And if we can really continue, I think I will definitely I’ll be happy that, despite the unforeseeable developments, we managed to agree on a format with all those responsible that we can be as safe as possible with. I’ll be happy then. But I need a few more weeks until then.” As usual, the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival will take place behind the Corona curtain.
